In 1978 we decided to start Pratheeksha Bhavan School for the Mentally retarded to impart special education and vocational training and a rehabilitation centre for those who do not get love and care from their parents.The School is recognized by National Trust, Govt.of India (Reg.No.1.3/89).

The institution is situated in the Thodupuzha Municipality and is on the Thodupuzha –Manakkad Road in the district of Idukki.Mental retardation is a complex phenomenon that may affect the social, behavioral, intellectual, physical and emotional development of a child. By giving proper training and quality services to these children, we can improve their performance in daily living skills so that they may be able to lead a near normal life. Our main goal is to train these children to stand on their own legs as far as possible.

It is run by the sisters of Sacred Heart Congregation Jyothy Province Kothamangalam. Students are introduced to concepts such as time, color, and trained in dressing, personal hygiene, eating, and so on. Yoga, speech therapy and physiotherapy are provided according to need. For older children who can cope, vocational training is arranged. Excursions and picnics for the whole group provide opportunities to develop social behavior skills and learn to interact with outside world. Tailor-made educational programs provide these students with basic life skills and fundamental concepts that will help them function as independently as possible on a day-to-day basis. We give much importance to render these children the utmost care, love and affection which they have not experienced in their homes and at the same time, to inculcate good habits, behaviour and discipline.
